Summer Visual Arts Intensive – Old Version

The NYC Summer Visual Arts Intensive (SVAI) offers students an opportunity to explore New York City’s diverse art world through visits to artists’ studios, workspaces, museums, and galleries. The SVAI carries 4 credits through NYAP’s managing. The SVAI is eligible for 4 credit hours through Ohio Wesleyan University.

By the end of the session each student will have:
  • Acquired an overview of contemporary art practice in NYC
  • Developed a critical vocabulary through first-hand encounters with artists and  curators  and their work
  • Participated in a project that instructs them in the collaborative dynamics of professional arts practice

SVAI Details

Students will explore New York’s diverse art worlds through visits to: artists’ studios, workspaces, museums and galleries, and engage with artist’s curators and educator. SVAI Director, Riad Miah collaborates with a wide range of guests artists, curators, galleries and museums during the four week intensive.
Participants for past SVAI have included:                                        Carrie Gundersdorf, Artist,  John J. O’Connor, Artist represented by Pierogi Gallery,  Paul D’Agostino, Writer, Curator, Artist,  Eileen Jeng, Curator and Operating Manage for RX Art,  Sangram Majumda, Artist, and Professor at MICA,  Jennifer Samet, Curator and Contributing Writer for Hyperallergic, Consultant Eliza Hollister, SVAI Alumnae,  Jenny Coates, Artist.                                                                                             Site visits can include MoMA,  MoMA PS1,  Dia:BeaconWave Hill,  The Cloisters,  Metropolitan Musem, Governors Island, Storm King Center and more.


Who can apply: Students who are currently enrolled at, or have graduated within two years from, an accredited college and university are eligible to apply. Admission is competitive. Preference may be given to studio and art history/curatorial studies majors; however, students from other majors with experience and a keen interest in the visual arts may apply.

Application Requirements: The SVAI application is on line.  You will be required to provide a brief letter describing your interest in the course, and what you hope to gain from the immersive experience; and two letters of recommendation from sources who can speak to your suitability for the program.                                    Work Samples: for Studio Artists/Majors, 10 digital images of artwork (you may submit a disk or  provide a link); for Art History Majors and those with an interest in curating museum/gallery work or teaching:  Two samples essays on art topics.
